I am Changho Kim, and I came to this camp two days ago. Within the two days I have made a lot of friends and learned a lot. As a mentor I had a tremendous experience from menteesmenties, mentors, and the Staff teachers. What I can say my favorite part is the night time, even though we had special guests during the days and our knowledge expanded but the night time was when we got to socialize. At night we got to fool around past bed time, watch scary movies, and just talk. Additionally to the fun social experiences with friends, our group assignments were fun too. Our topic of discussion was “should policemen wear body cameras” The situation we, as humans, face today is police brutality. But before we start making accusations we must analyze the facts. Picture yourself investigating crime scene:
Victims: Citizens (us)
Suspect: Local Police Departments
Evidence: Michael Brown / Freddy Grey
Punishment: Body Cameras
Judge: United States Department of Justice
Now that we have all the facts, we must analyze them. It is true that the Police force is filled with corruption and injustice. But if you think about it, isn’t it the Department of Justice that is supposed to punish them properly. To be honest, the rate of crime has been dropping since the nineteen eighties, and these mishaps happen once every ten years. Along with the falling crime rate, the biggest reason is the cost. With 900,000 policemen across the country the budget cost would result in the millions. In my personal opinion, reforming and exchanging members inside
The United States Justice Department is easier than spending millions for something we don’t need. Corruption is everywhere we can’t escape it, we can see corruption in local businesses, schools, and even non-profit organizations. These are so many people that have been saved by these brave officers. The amount of police officers that die outweigh the victims they kill. And imagine, these policemen’s position, they are patrolling these streets where their comrades have been killed. If we compare the difference of American Policemen to Police officers in other areas, the United States Police force is far more civilized. In countries like the Philippines, India, and Indonesia, the policemen brutally conduct punishment and executions publically and gets away with it even with hundreds of witnesses. Situations like Ferguson and Baltimore happen once every five years.
